We are seeking a motivated Technical Assistant – Speed Breeding Assistant with experience in glasshouse-based plant husbandry and plant crossing/hybridisation to join our grains crop genetics team. You will support research that aims to understand the genetic basis of trait variation for varietal improvement in cereal, pulse and oilseed crops. You will work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team that supports the Australian grains pre-breeding sector, as well as research that is closely linked with implementation activities in crop breeding and germplasm improvement programs.
The position involves participating as part of a glasshouse-based team that is responsible for undertaking germplasm evaluation under controlled environments, crossing/hybridisation and generational advancement using conventional, as well as accelerated (“speed”) breeding approaches. You will participate in the development and implementation of protocols and methodology for accelerated crop breeding and germplasm evaluation. You will be responsible for delivering specific research milestones for a range of collaborative and industry co-funded projects under the direction of the Senior Technical staff.

  • Perform, under general supervision, germplasm evaluation, plant husbandry, plant hybridisation/crossing and generational advancement for cereal, oilseed and pulse crops.
  • Plan and prioritise own work to achieve defined targets; maintain clear and accurate records of work performed; participate in cross-training of staff and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Assist in the design, setup and management of experiments and analysis of experimental data; develop knowledge and skills in areas that support the research undertaken.
  • Support senior scientists in the preparation of reports for internal and external collaborators, including journal publication of science outputs.
  • Maintain effective communications with other members of the project team; actively engage in discussions and meetings to improve work practices and protocols and ensure a positive work environment and group culture of achievement.
